Over the course of his programme, artist Rangskhembor has engaging with children from his hometown in Mairang village (Meghalaya) to open out a studio space where they can explore the basics in art practice, and create visuals relating to folklore that is particular to their village.

Students have gone on multiple excursions for drawing at important historical sites around their Mairang village,  guided by artist Rang.

Along with Rang’s guidance, children across ages have been exploring visual storytelling, going on drawing excursions to significant sites around them and learning the use of natural materials for drawing and painting such as rice husk, mud and coal. Participants experimented with different formats of  handmade books.

Rang’s home-studio, ‘Studio Khrum’, has grown into a space for students in his village interested in art, to hone their skills.

The work was exhibited at the Village Hall in Mairang, which was the first ever local exhibition of this kind!

We are so thankful to Seema Kohli Studios for supporting this project.

Students have created scrolls, paintings, and collages and exhibited their work in the first ever village exhibition in Mairang.

"They do most of the painting themselves, but I help them mostly in the technical area of compositions, drawing, colour application, binding and what subjects they can add to their paintings so that it can represent the theme they choose. They are new to representing their paintings in different formats, I  suggested they try out the book formats and scroll and to see what other possibilities there are."
